10 easy ways to spike your blog’s Web traffic
Contrary to popular belief, generating more Web traffic to your blog does not have to be time-consuming, difficult, or costly.
In fact, many of the techniques used by professional bloggers are relatively quick fixes that will result in higher traffic and more subscribers.
Looking to get a bigger piece of that blogosphere pie? Here are 10 proven traffic-spiking tips.
10. Be passionate about creating awesome Web content
Blogs typically start when somebody is so passionate about something that they are compelled to write and share their knowledge with others on the Internet.
If you are passionate about your blog’s subject, then you will probably write regularly (at least weekly) about it. You’d have no problem coming up with fresh, original content.
In fact, that’s WHY you do it in the first place. You love to learn it and teach it in your blog. But what happens when that passion starts to wane?
Sure, it probably started off with a bang and daily postings. But no traffic and other frustrations may lead to month-long lapses between new posts…or more.
If you don’t love what you’re blogging about, then you’ll eventually look at blogging as a chore.
And nobody does chores for fun. However, people usually blog for fun.
9. Come out swinging in the opener
Your first line needs to grab the reader’s attention.
For some excellent examples of openers, read The Sales Lion’s post about how to write a good opener. He talks about how a great blog opening paragraph needs to convey:
- Empathy (you’re not the only one with that issue)
- Expertise (I’m the one who will fix your problem)
8. Spellcheck says “Whazzzzzzzzup!”
Spellcheck has been around since before that commercial was awesome.
Sure, we all make mistakes. A typo here and there is forgivable. But you still need to put out good content that projects knowledge and expertise.
Or at the very least…you need to fake it till you make it.
7. Humor is the universal language
It doesn’t matter who you are.
Everybody LOVES to laugh. It doesn’t matter your race, creed, color, or anything else. We ALL love to laugh and you know it.
So if everybody loves to laugh, then don’t be afraid to shake your funnymaker in your blog posts.
6. Make good titles
Think of titles as the bait that lures the fish to the hook (your content).
Use the right bait, and you will catch more fish…then we all get to eat!
Good blog titles can make a huge impact on traffic. I actually debated whether I wanted to call this blog post “10 ways to make your blog suck less”. Hopefully I made the right call.
The key to a good title? Make them brief yet meaningful, actionable, and interesting.
5. Use visuals to add to the story
Humans are visual beings. Meaning, we like to look at stuff.
Sometimes even weird stuff. Like this yodelling pickle:
That’s weird, but you know what’s weirder?
A blog with NO pictures!
OK, you’re still thinking about the yodelling pickle, aren’t you?
Go ahead, check it out, you know it’s weird.
Anyway, if I’m looking at an unfamiliar blog post that does NOT have any images or anything visual, then my next move is pointing my cursor towards that big red X in the browser and saying buh-bye to your no-pic blog.
Let me know when you add pics, and I’ll visit it again. Maybe.
4. Break up big blocks of text
Nobody besides boring people want to read big boring blocks of text.
Break up big blocks into 2-3 lines max.
Make your text scannable and easy to skim.
3. Bold key words
Studies have shown that the average Web visitor only reads 20% of Web content.
You want your reader to quickly and easily get your emotion or viewpoint.
Give your reader a hand and bold those words or phrases that need to be emphasized. Just don’t go overboard.
It’s better to have a post with only a few key words highlighted than to have an overbolded mess of a post.
You want to give your reader jumping off points for the next thought. So use your formatting strategically.
2. Fill out ALL the info
Some people may leave things like the Description, Text, and Alternative text blank when they add images to blog posts.
If you do this, then you are missing out on easy ways to get your post and images found in search engines.
Which brings us to my last tip:
1. Use SEO keywords
Use good SEO techniques and your blog will end up ranking higher in search results, resulting in more clicks from visitors searching about stuff you talk about in your blog.
WordPress allows me to enter “tags” when I create my posts. For these tags, I enter words or phrases related to my blog post content that follow a question format that mimics how I would ask Google a question.
For example, in this blog post, I used the keywords “tips to write better blog posts” because I’ll search Google using that exact phrase or something like it.
Conclusion
It is possible to build massive traffic to your blog.
However, nothing is possible when you don’t even TRY.
